The Carrau winery is one of the better known in Uruguay, having produced premium wines before many of their neighbours in Canelones. Coming from a Catalan family with a history in wine reaching back to the 1750s, they settled in Uruguay in the 1930s and began making wine here.
The winery is now in the hands five brothers and sisters who run not only the historical winery in Canelones, just outside of Montevideo, but also a modern state-of-the-art winery in the very north of Uruguay, bordering Brazil, in Cerro Chapeu, Rivera.
The large portfolio encompasses many varieties but Tannat remains their speciality with winemaker Francisco Carrau holding some of the most prestigious titles in Uruguay for his research into the variety.
