Alto de la Ballena
Paula and Alvaro’s Alto de la Ballena winery may look unassuming from the outside, but this boutique project is one of the most pioneering in Uruguay. In 2001 they quit their jobs in the city and bought 20 hectares of land just a couple kilometers from the sea.
At first they were seen as ‘loco’ for planting on such poor soils with a much cooler maritime climate, within a couple years however, people started waking up to the quality from Maldonado and Alto de la Ballena were the pioneers of this now up-and-coming region.
Focusing on the varieties they most like to drink, with Merlot and Cabernet Franc in the forefront, Paula and Alvaro make attractive and characterful wines. Their Syrah is also of excellent quality, and one of their most renowned wines is their Tannat blended with Viognier.
Try to visit late afternoon so you can catch the sunset over the hills!
